WEATHER BLOG: CCISD places three schools in lockdown due to weather


1:29 p.m. - The Hooks game against Arkansas scheduled for tonight at Whataburger Field has been postponed.

12:58 p.m. - The City of Kingsville is asking residents to consider all roads closed until further notice.
Please consider all city roads closed, as many streets are covered in deep water and emergency crews may not be able to get to you. State roads are flooded as well, says a release from the city.
The city has recorded 8 to 10 inches of stormwater at different points in the city and the rain is still coming down, according to officials. ....

City allows Dollar General developer to move on Wheat-Main intersection


The store, 10,813 square feet in size, will go onto a field that marks the end of a business zone and the start of an agricultural zone. The board also approved a subdivision to create the necessary lot for the store.
“You know, it’s an interesting thing,” city Engineer David Maillet said. “You know, we’ve got a retail store that doesn’t behave like the retail stores of the past.”

City to spend $1.5M to fix streets | News, Sports, Jobs

WARREN The city is looking at spending more than $1.55 million on street repairs using money from the 0.5 percent income tax for police, fire and roads.
The tax first was approved in 2016 and renewed last fall.
The original legislation required the city to use $500,000 annually to repair and upgrade city roads that do not receive state or federal matching funds.
City Auditor Vince Flask said the extra $1 million placed in the local road repair budget also is coming from the tax.
“It took the city a while to fill the ranks in the police and fire departments, so we collected funds that were not used,” Flask said. ....

In 1916, brothers King and Ben Thompson, who eventually were responsible for the early planning of what would become Upper Arlington, established the Northwest Boulevard Co. to realize a dream of developing the community, which they had envisioned to be similar to one they had visited in Kansas City.
The plan of development was to be executed on the Miller farm north of Fifth Avenue due to the land’s location, attractiveness and environment. The Miller farm was close to Columbus’ city center (“within three and one-half miles, in a straight line, from the business center of Columbus”) and was on high ground – an aspect especially important in the context of the Great Flood of 1913 that severely affected central Ohio. ....
