Bountiful High School’s new mascot is the Redhawks.
Principal Aaron Hogge made the announcement on YouTube Friday, culminating several months of study and community input to inform the selection of a new “culturally sensitive mascot.”
“A red-tailed hawk is the most common hawk species in North America. It can be spotted soaring above the rural areas from coast to coast. The identifying characteristics of these hawks are keen eyesight, binocular vision and powerful talons. It is one of the biggest birds of prey found in the mountains above Bountiful,” Hogge said. ....

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - A mostly white high school near Salt Lake City revealed its new mascot Friday that will replace its contentious Braves mascot, as school and professional sports teams nationwide face increasing backlash about using Native American names and symbols.
The Redhawks will become Bountiful High School’s mascot starting next fall, Principal Aaron Hogge announced. The school is still designing its new official logo.
He said the red-tailed hawk is the most common hawk species in North America and “is one of the biggest birds of prey found in the mountains above Bountiful.” ....

BOUNTIFUL The Bountiful High School administration is nearing a decision on the school’s new mascot and is surveying students and members of the public on their preferences.
The options? How about the Bears? Blazers/Trailblazers? Lightning/Bolts or Redhawks?
The survey closes Monday.
“While the final decision will be made by the Bountiful High School administration, student and public input is a valuable part of the decision-making,” the survey states. ....
