The partner of a soldier who died at a Far North beach trying to rescue children swept out to sea is heartbroken to learn the tragedy could have been prevented.
Wairongoa Renata, 54, better known
as Magoo or Tickety-Boo, drowned at Cable Bay in January 2018 after swimming out to help his daughter, then aged 11, and other children in distress in the water. ....

Northland s chief environment watchdog is warning people planning to burn unwanted waste material this autumn to follow the rules or risk stiff penalties, including court action.
The warning by the Northland Regional Council follows an average of 252 burning and smoke nuisance complaints it receives each year, or 25 per cent of all incidents reported on its Environment Hotline. ....

Northland s emergency rescue helicopter base in Whangārei is being forced to move after growing noise complaints from neighbours.
It s unbearable, a helicopter operation of this nature here in Kensington shouldn t be operating in a residential area, Roger de Bray, former Top Energy chief executive who now lives 100m from the Kensington helicopter base, said.
Whangārei mayor Sheryl Mai said she was aware of increasing noise complaints about the helicopter operation, which would be moving out of the site as a result. ....
