Woman, 25, reveals she collapsed to the floor with shock following rare breast cancer diagnosis

A woman who underwent a lifesaving mastectomy in her 20s after the lump in her breast turned out to be a rare form of cancer is taking part in a modelling campaign for charity.
Hairdresser Sacha Mills, 25, from Basingstoke, Hampshire, collapsed to the floor with shock when she was first diagnosed with stage 3 triple-negative breast cancer in May 2020.
The following month, at the age of 24, Sacha had her left breast removed before undergoing chemotherapy and is currently cancer free after finishing her radiotherapy treatment in March.
Now, Sacha is taking part in a River Island modelling campaign to raise awareness and funding for charity Breast Cancer Now and says she s thrilled to be fulfilling her passion after beating cancer. ....

South Ham stabbing: Man in critical condition at hospital

A man is in a critical condition tonight after a stabbing in Basingstoke this afternoon.
Five ambulances and the air ambulance were scrambled to St Peter s Road in South Ham this afternoon after reports of a serious assault.
Several police vehicles also descended on the scene and the road has been closed for several hours.
South Central Ambulance Service said they received several 999 calls at around 3.15pm.
Two people were found with stab wounds, with one of them in critical condition.
A man was transferred by road to the major trauma centre at University Hospital Southampton, whilst the female had minor hand/arm injuries and was taken to Basingstoke hospital. ....

Covid-19: Hampshire Hospitals visiting rules start to be relaxed

Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is reducing visitor restrictions but says strict measures remain in force.
The trust today announced the start of a gradual relaxation of the visiting restrictions that were imposed due to Covid-19.
Today the trust was treating seven Covid patients in Basingstoke hospitals, one in the RHCH in Winchester and none in Andover. In January the trust was treating more than 160, including 57 at the RHCH.
Julie Dawes, chief nurse at the trust, said: Visitor restrictions are not something that we would ever wish to implement for extended periods of time.
“Anyone who has worked in the NHS will have seen the positive impact relatives, loved ones and friends can have on a patient - an extra set of eyes, a familiar face and voice. Unfortunately, Covid-19 has necessitated many changes which we didn’t think possible just over a year ago. ....

et al. have undertaken in-depth sequencing of more than 1000 hospital patients isolates to find out how the virus is mutating within individuals. Overall, there seem to be consistent and reproducible patterns of within-host virus diversity. The authors observed only one or two variants in most samples, but a few carried many variants. Although the evidence indicates strong purifying selection, including in the spike protein responsible for viral entry, the authors also saw evidence for transmission clusters associated with households and other possible superspreader events. After transmission, most variants fizzled out, but occasionally some initiated ongoing transmission and wider dissemin ....
