One month into 2021 the trend of less than usual precipitation continues.
2020 wrapped up as one of the driest years on record with the least precipitation since 1925, just 10.94 inches. That’s more than six inches below average and slightly more than half of the 20.86 inches of precipitation that fell over the region in 2019.
Now, with the Minot area and much of the state designated as being in “severe” drought, the first month of 2021 is more of the same. Official January 2021 precipitation, as measured at the North Central Research and Extension Center south of the city, was a paltry 0.28 inch.
As small as that amount may seem, January’s average is only 0.51 inches. However, perhaps telling, January marked the twelfth time in the past 13 months that precipitation has been below the long-term average. ....

Dry conditions during the winter season are­­ not particularly unusual in North Dakota, where winter snowfall is relied upon to replenish soil moisture.
So far this winter though, snowfall has been very minimal. The lack of snow cover, following a year of much less than average precipitation, becomes more concerning as the days become longer. Without an ample snowpack to melt and soak into the soil the reversal of dry conditions heading into spring becomes dependant on sufficient rainfall.
The U.S. Drought Monitor rates 62% of the state as being in “severe” drought. The designation includes all of Ward and surrounding counties. ....
