York County school districts launch summer meal programs to feed kids York Dispatch With food insecurity rates rising across Pennsylvania, several local school districts have started free summer meal programs to get food to families in need. At least seven of York County s 16 public school districts are advertising summer meal programs on their websites, all of which have already launched or will launch next week. The COVID-19 pandemic elevated the need for these programs as food insecurity levels rose statewide. According to the nonprofit Communities In Schools of Pennsylvania, food insecurity for children in the state rose from 15% to 35% during the pandemic, partially due to the increase in at-home learning limiting food access in some households. ....
York Dispatch Northeastern and Southern York County school districts each closed one school Friday after seeing a rise in COVID-19 cases linked to their buildings. Northeastern closed Shallow Brook Intermediate School after recording two recent COVID-19 cases at the building, according to a district announcement Thursday night. Southern closed Shrewsbury Elementary after recording six cases within a 14-day window, according to the district s online COVID-19 dashboard. Both schools are set to reopen to students Monday. This is not the first recent COVID-19 closure for either district. Northeastern closed Mount Wolf Elementary, Orendorf Elementary and Spring Forge Intermediate in April, while Southern closed Shrewsbury Elementary a separate time and Susquehannock High School the same month. ....

About 6,000 square feet that wound up in two neighboring backyards decades ago have been reclaimed by the descendants of Jane Warren, a freed slave who had a ranch in the area after the Civil War. The Northern Hills subdivision borders the cemetery on one side and Northern Hills Elementary on the other. The fences in those backyards were torn down last week and replaced with new fencing where a certified land survey showed the property lines actually were. ....
Three Shawnee County teachers, Elissa Jones, Jennifer Womack and Kaitlin Gile, have been awarded their certification from the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards. Jones, Womack and Gile, who all earned the certification on their first try a difficult task to complete are three of 10 Kansas teachers who earned their certification. Gile, who teaches in the Seaman School District, is a fourth-grade teacher at Northern Hills Elementary School. She earned her certification in literacy. Jones, who teaches in the USD 501 school district, is an English teacher to speakers of other languages at Topeka West High School and received her certification in English as a new language. ....
