Calcium Fire Department to host fundraiser for K-9 protective equipment Saturday


CALCIUM — While the local community often shows its support for human officers, oftentimes their four-legged counterparts can be overlooked. An annual fundraiser to raise money for protective equipment for K-9s seeks to change that.
While normally held at the North Pole Fire Department, this year’s event will take place today at the Calcium Fire Department and will be a drive-thru style in order for everyone to stay safe amid the pandemic.
This will be the event’s sixth year, with the idea originally coming from a realization that there was a need for K-9s, that they didn’t have body armor and were potentially unsafe. ....

PAMELIA, N.Y. (WWNY) - Fire destroyed a car dealership in the town of Pamelia Thursday morning.
The fire was at G & J Auto Sales at 22033 U.S. Route 11 just outside Watertown city limits.
The dealership and an attached storage building were destroyed.
The call came in around 3:30 a.m. with heavy fire in the garage and office area.
A portion of Route 11 was closed for several hours but has since reopened.
Joe Plummer, director of Jefferson County’s Office of Fire and Emergency Management, said nobody was hurt and the fire is not suspicious. Plummer says it could take a few days for officials to determine a cause. ....

North Pole police respond to morning shooting incident


The North Pole Police Department responded to an active shooter near the 500 block of West Fifth Avenue about 11 a.m. on Thursday.
According to Lt. Jeromey Lindhag, North Pole police received several reports of shots being fired outside of an apartment complex in the area. When officers, along with Alaska State Troopers and the North Pole Fire Department, responded to the scene, they found that a juvenile male had fired three to four shots. No one was injured in the incident.
Lindhag said that the individual had apparently been going in and out of an apartment in the complex. He was inside the building when law enforcement arrived. Lindhag said when they knocked on the door, the suspect eventually cooperated with orders and surrendered himself. Lindhag said there is not yet a clear motive, but the individual is currently being interviewed. ....

WATERTOWN, N.Y. (WWNY) - Fire officials will investigate the cause of a mattress fire in the town of Watertown Tuesday morning.
The call came in just after 4:30 a.m. for a possible structure fire at the Hotis Motel on State Route 37.
Fire crews arrived to find a bed smoldering in room 12.
Officials say the resident of that room did their best to extinguish the fire and remove debris.
As a result, fire crews just had to put out some hot spots and clean up some debris. ....
