The Northern Policy Institute has launched its eighth Experience North Summer Placement Program and there is some local representation.
Every summer, the NPI makes available four-month placements across Northern Ontario where participants learn and gain first-hand experience on policy changes to strengthen and grow communities across the region.
This year Holly Parsons and Lindsay Bain, both representing Sioux Lookout, have been selected.
Parsons will help economists identify, collect, and compile rural and northern indicators developed through local research and partnerships.
Bain will be exploring the progress of treaty implementation both before and after the closure of Ontario’s Treaty Commission. ....

Barriers For First Nations In Funding Applications

Northern Policy Institute Report

NPI President Charles Cirtwell says on average a First Nation submits over 130 reports annually about the funding they have received, creating a burden on already stretched Band staff.
Cirtwell says the current system is plagued with the duplication of information and requires more, unnecessary work for Band staff. ....

A new report from the Northern Policy Institute finds that First Nations face hurdles when it comes to applying for and reporting on funding.
NPI President Charles Cirtwell says on average a First Nation submits over 130 reports annually about the funding they have received, creating a burden on already stretched Band staff.
“What we found is they spend a lot of time filling out various reports that basically ask them the same thing over and over again and never get any feedback on how that information is used,” says Cirtwell.
Cirtwell adds sometimes the community’s goals for the project don’t match the outcomes that the funder wants to be reported. ....
