Caitlin Green: Another eleventh-century medieval Chinese coin found in England

Another eleventh-century medieval Chinese coin found in England
A previous post discussed a find of a Northern Song dynasty Chinese coin from England whose context suggested that it may have been a genuine ancient loss from the medieval period, along with a variety of textual and archaeological evidence for contact between England and East Asia in the Middle Ages. The following post returns briefly to this question, noting the recent discovery of a second Northern Song dynasty coin from England.

New key archaeological findings in the southwest of downtown Beijing unveil the city s early years as the national capital , dating back about 900 years.
The first discovery of outer city wall ruins of Zhongdu, or central capital, of Jin Dynasty (1115-1234) were unearthed in a two-yearlong archaeological research, said the Beijing Municipal Administration of Cultural Heritage on Wednesday.
Ding Lina, the lead archaeologist of the project, said five sections of earthen wall ruins totaling 60 meters were discovered in Fengtai district. They were originally on the western and southern sides of the capital city during the J ....

An excavation in Beijing s southwest Fengtai district has uncovered archaeological remains believed to date back to the Jin dynasty (1115-1234) when the region was first denoted as the national capital.
So far, the dig has exposed a 60-meter stretch of city wall ruins as well as a 66-meter-wide moat, the first Jin moat to have been discovered in Beijing, according to the
Global Times. Defense structures, some bricks and chips of Ding and Jun ware porcelain, and tombs dating from the Tang (618-907) and Liao (916-1125) dynasties were also unearthed. ....

Out of Place Chinese Coins Prompt Wonder: Did Medieval Asia and Britain Interact?

Doubts Cast on the Chinese Coins
In 2018, the Portable Antiquities Scheme described the worn coin from Cheshire as a cast copper alloy piece minted during the Xining reign (1068 -1077 AD.) They declared “It is doubtful that this is a genuine medieval find (i.e. present in the country due to trade and lost accidentally) but more likely a more recent loss from an [sic] curated collection.” But Dr. Green worries the ‘loss from a curated collection’ explanation for unusual discoveries is overused, writing,
“although the possibility of a loss from a curated collection certainly cannot be discounted, it can be perhaps overused as an explanation for surprising finds as ....
