Mount Bruce, Masterton: Pūkaha National Wildlife Centre’s whare whakairo (carving workshop) ‘Rere Te Maramara’ is now open to the public. It is one of the first publicly visible developments of Pūkaha’s $4.5 million Environment and Ecology Education programme that includes the build of a learning centre, wharenui, accommodation and nocturnal boardwalk.
The whare whakairo was blessed by Maori kaumātua (elders), dignitaries, whānau and Pūkaha staff in a private ‘light of dawn’ ceremony late last year that commemorated the new building and the significance for local Maori. Three local carvers; Tipene Kawana, Tamai Nicholson and Carl Rongonui; representing local iwi Ran ....

The kiwi are native only to the country of New Zealand.
There are five different species of kiwi.
Kiwi are nocturnal, which means that they are generally active at night, and asleep during the day.
The kiwi is an endangered species.
Kiwis, an icon of New Zealand, are flightless birds endemic to the country. About the size of a domestic chicken, kiwis are the smallest extant ratites (a bird group including several flightless birds like ostriches, cassowaries, emus, etc.). There are five species of kiwis, of which four species are threatened (listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List) and one is near-threatened.  ....

World s First Rare White Kiwi Manukura Dies Post Surgery in New Zealand

World s first-ever ultra-rare white Kiwi bird, known as Manukura, is no more.
The National Treasure of New Zealand was declared dead after undergoing surgery. The unique bird, who inspired children s books and toys, was losing weight and not eating early this month. Rangers caring for Manukura informed and got her admitted to a local Wildbase Hospital. The wild animal veterinary practice specialist is located at Massey University in Palmerston North.
Pūkaha National Wildlife Centre, Manukura’s habitat, broke the sad news in a social media post. Shared on its official Facebook handle, the post revealed that the first white kiwi hatched in captivity died on December 27, 2020  at 12.50 pm. ....

Manukura passed away peacefully on Sunday
A rare white kiwi that inspired a children s book and toys has died.
Manukura hatched in 2011, but the female North Island Brown Kiwi was born with white feathers.
She became a huge attraction at both Pukaha Mount Bruce, New Zealand s North Island wildlife centre, and online. Replica soft toys were of Manukura were sold around the world.
Manukura passed away peacefully on Sunday with rangers and veterinary staff present, it added.
She will be sorely missed.
Manukura was the first of three white kiwi that hatched at the same centre in 2011 and 2012. ....
