The California Department of Fish and Game is encouraging Northern California residents to remove bird feeders for a month to help slow an outbreak of salmonellosis, a disease affecting small brown birds known as pine siskins that live primarily in wooded areas. Pine siskins have been coming through Davis in unusually large numbers.

At the Pond: Yolo Audubon has 50th annual Christmas Bird Count

At the Pond: Yolo Audubon has 50th annual Christmas Bird Count 3 minute read This male mallard coming in for a landing was among the 36 species spotted on a recent Friends of North Davis Ponds bird stroll. Ed Hubbard/Courtesy photo Support Local Journalism This slideshow requires JavaScript. It’s the 50th anniversary of Yolo Audubon’s participation in the Christmas Bird Count, a one-day winter census of birds counted in a 15-mile diameter circle on Dec. 20. The first count was in 1900, but before that, people went out and shot birds on Christmas. We’ve advanced. Now we count. It’s another citizen-science event that helps us understand the status of birds. Normally, beginners are included but this will be a restricted year with small teams of one or two people.
