Beating the Bounds goes ahead in Oxford without an audience

ONE of Oxford’s most cherished traditions took place quietly today without the usual crowds it would attract.
Various locations in the city centre were ‘beat’ by members of Oxford’s oldest church, St Michael at the North Gate Church, keeping up a tradition dating back 600 years.
Prayers were read by Reverend Anthony Buckley at locations as diverse as Boots, Brasenose College and Broad Street – all part of Beating the Bounds.
Taking place 49 days after Easter Sunday, on Ascension Day, Beating the Bounds dates back to when parish boundaries were more significant than they are today.
Mr Buckley marked the boundary stones by drawing a cross with chalk, and then with a willow wand, the church warden shouted ‘mark, mark, mark’. ....

KidsBank Chester awarded "game changing" £45,000 grant | Chester and District Standard

A CHARITY which provides baby items to families in need has been awarded a game changing £45,000 grant.
KidsBank Chester, set up in 2019 in response to rising child poverty in the area, will use the funds to double its storage capacity.
The grant has been awarded by the Chester Bluecoat Charity, one of the oldest in the city, to the tune of £15,000 per year for three years.
KidsBank Chester has outgrown its current premises at The Studio, Northgate Church, Chester, seeing its referral numbers double since January 2020.
Founder Cathy Pettingale said: “The generous grant from The Chester Bluecoat Charity means we can double our storage capacity and therefore increase the reach of our services. ....

Red Cross calls for healthy blood donors following severe weather
CAMBRIDGE, Ohio – Record-breaking cold and winter storms across much of the U.S. have had a significant impact on blood donations. The American Red Cross is urging healthy individuals, especially those with type O blood, to give now to ensure blood products are available for patient emergencies when help can’t wait.
Extreme winter weather has forced the cancellation of hundreds of Red Cross blood drives in about 30 states and caused more than 15,000 blood and platelet donations to go uncollected. In Ohio, 600 units have gone uncollected as at least 20 blood drives canceled across the state. ....

The distribution of free food for local residents may not be grabbing the headlines the way it did at the start of the pandemic, but the programs haven t stopped and the need has not subsided, according to leaders at two organizations involved in handing out bags and boxes of vegetables, dairy products, and canned goods.
We ve been feeding 500 families a week, said Ryan Macdonald, a pastor at City Church, which conducts free food distributions on Wednesday mornings at St. Anthony s on Liberty Street. There s a lot of need out there. It s sad. ....

ELEPHANT poo notebooks, thunder-making machines and ornaments made from recycled coke cans – Oxford’s Fairtrade at St Michael’s shop is an Aladdin’s Cave of goods.
Now, the woman who has managed the shop, which helps support some of the world’s poorest producers by giving them a fair deal, for 10 years is reluctantly handing over the reins.
Gilli Robbins, 65, was one of the first volunteers when the store opened in the basement at St Michael at the Northgate Church in Cornmarket Street in 2003. ....
