Portland voters to consider $36.2 million budget proposal Monday FacebookTwitterEmail PORTLAND The proposed budget will now go to referendum, following a sparsely attended town meeting May 10. The town-wide referendum on the $36.2 million proposal will be held from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. in the middle school cafeteria at 93 High St. May 10 is also the day the state Office of Policy & Management is expected to release data on the first traunch of federal stimulus funds being given the state’s 169 cities and towns. The two issues the budget and the stimulus funds do have a connection, First Selectwoman Susan S. Bransfield acknowledged. The town and the Board of Education are both applying for money from the stimulus package to their respective budgets. In doing so, they are holding down the projected tax increase for the coming fiscal year, which begins July 1.

Places to enjoy with your dog in New Bedford and Fall River area

Editor s note: Seth Chitwood is The Standard-Times new special projects reporter, and he s trying to learn his way around the SouthCoast. I’m a dog uncle! And last weekend, I got to spend time with my doggy-niece, Bayes. Bayes is a mutt but her DNA test said she’s a mix of Australian cattle dog, shih tzu and poodle. Before she was adopted by my sister and her husband, she was a stray dog in rural Texas. She was adopted in May from the SNARR Northwest Adoption Center in Brewster, NY. We believe Bayes is over a year old. My sister, Melanie, named Bayes after the statistician and philosopher, Thomas Bayes and his theorem. She uses the Bayes’ theorem in her disease modeling work as she gets her PhD in epidemiology.
