Biodegradable yoga mat developed by 6 young girls from Assam may save lakes from water hyacinth menace

New Delhi: A biodegradable and compostable yoga mat developed from water hyacinth by six young girls from the fishing community in Assam could turn this water plant from a nuisance to wealth.
The girls belong to the fishing community living in the fringe of the Deepor Beel, a permanent freshwater lake in south west of Guwahati city, recognised as a Ramsar Site (a wetland of international importance) and a bird wildlife sanctuary. The lake has been a source of livelihood for 9 villages of the fishing community who shared this biome for centuries, but over the years suffered from excessive growth and accumulation of water hyacinth. ....

Rao, IAS, Chief Secretary of Meghalaya, visited the CSIR-CMERI exhibit & expressed a lot of interest in the CSIR-CMERITechnologies especially the Ginger-Turmeric Processing unit, Solar-based Hybrid Mini-Grid& municipal waste management. Shri Rao showed his interest to explore avenues for roping in CSIR-CMERI technologies for empowering Meghalaya and making it Sustainable. Shri Sanjib Dhar, Joint Secretary, Ri-Bhoi Farmers Union, Meghalaya shared their enthusiasm and amazement at the CSIR-CMERI Ginger-Turmeric Processing Technologies. Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Kaziranga University (K.U.), Jorhat, on January 28, 2021. IIT Guwahati hosted the MoU signing event for the Kaziranga University team including, Dr. P. K. Mishra, Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Diganta Munshi, Registrar, and other faculty delegates.
The MoU was signed between Prof. T. G. Sitharam, Director, IIT Guwahati, and Dr. P. K. Mishra, Vice-Chancellor, K.U. This will enable both the Institutes to closely engage in the areas of curriculum enhancement, collaborative work in the field of research & development and boosting entrepreneurship ecosystem in the region.
