Massachusetts officials have announced $972,000 in grants going to high schools in Springfield, Boston and Beverly to allow for after-school programming for teens with substance use disorder or who are at risk for developing the disorder.
The award recipients are the Springfield Public Schools, Action for Boston Community Development (ABCD) and the Northshore Education Consortium in Beverly.
“Research has shown that being in a school setting that promotes recovery provides students with an influential network that can lead to academic success and a reduction in substance use,” said Health and Human Services Secretary Marylou Sudders. “This award will expand after-school and outside of school supports particularly in response to the disruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.” ....

BEVERLY, MA Beverly High School is one of three in the state that will share in $972,000 in grants to fund substance-abuse programs for students ages 13 through 17.
The state Department of Public Health said Beverly, Boston and Springfield will receive the grants for students with a substance use disorder or who have been identified as high risk. The program, which in Beverly will be administered through the Northshore Education Consortium, will include educational tutoring, recreational activities, year-round after-school and out-of-school programs as well as intervention and recovery support programs. ....

BOSTON (AP) Three organizations across the state are sharing nearly $1 million in grants to help teenagers either struggling with or at risk of developing substance abuse disorder, officials announced Thursday.
The grants announced by the state Executive Office of Health and Human Services and the Department of Public Health are going to programs for youths ages 13 through 17 in Beverly, Boston and Springfield.
They are the Action for Boston Community Development, the Springfield public schools, and the Northshore Education Consortium in Beverly.
The programs provide tutoring, recreational activities, and intervention or recovery support programs. ....

A total of 812 new cases of COVID-19 have been reported in Massachusetts schools during a two-week period that includes April break, education officials said Thursday.
From April 15 to April 28, public schools reported 718 students and 94 staff members were positive for the coronavirus, according to data from the state Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. Those figures include students and staffers who tested positive within seven days of being in a school building.
Those positives included 711 students and 85 staffers at local school districts, 3 students and 5 staffers at education collaboratives, and 4 students and 4 staffers at approved special education schools. ....
