Northern Undergraduate Student Society launches FUNdrive to support UNBC students in need SHARE ON: UNBC Sign (Photo by Abby Dooks, UNBC) The Northern Undergraduate Student Society is teaming up with Value Village to raise funds for the NUGSS food bank. NUGSS will be holding a FUNdrive at the society’s UNBC office Monday through Friday until May 25th, with hopes of raising at least $500. They will be collecting clothing, shoes and accessories, household textiles, and small household goods such as kitchen appliances, home decorative items, knick-knacks, toys, games and small electronics. Typically, the society keeps a main food bank in its office and four satellite locations at the PG UNBC campus, however, the pandemic has changed the way they operate. ....

“We want to bring menstrual products to campus and make them available free-of-charge for students and other people who access the university who are menstruating to end period poverty and end the stigma they may be experiencing,” said Emily Erickson, a student currently completing a practicum at the Northern Women’s Centre. “Period poverty is something menstruating people experience when they don’t have the proper tools, such as menstruation products, to manage their periods.” Menstrual products are expensive and some people are forced to forgo buying other essentials to purchase them, Erickson said. “We don’t want people to have to choose between coming to class or staying home because they don’t have proper products to make their day comfortable and sanitary,” she said. “Everyone has the right to feel clean and comfortable.” ....
The editor-in-chief of UNBC’s student newspaper believes a referendum this week on whether to give it autonomy from the university will pass, though it will come at an extra cost to students. They will vote Monday and Tuesday yes or no to forking over $5 per semester to support Over the Edge, which wants to separate itself from the Northern Undergraduate Student Society (NUGSS) after a flap over an article published in September. Students currently pay $2 of their $32 student fee to the newspaper through NUGSS. “I do think it will pass,” Burkholder said Thursday. “I think the students will be supportive. They feel this is really important.” ....
