(AP) With pent-up demand for dine-in meals colliding headlong into restaurants struggling to rebuild their staffs, Giselle Gaeta doesn’t have the bandwidth to be bubbly. The Summerville location of Gypsy Pantry, where Gaeta works, is down five employees, so she and her colleagues are scrambling to cover for the shortfall. “My main goal is to get you everything you need, fast (and) efficiently,” Gaeta said of her approach. That wasn’t enough for a recent customer who bypassed the pre-calculated tip choices on his check to leave a “custom tip” of 8 percent on a $57.88 bill. ....
Charleston child care worker charged with hitting infants April 11, 2021 FacebookTwitterEmail CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) A judge is denying bail to a child care employee who is charged with assaulting three infants at a Charleston daycare center. WCSC-TV reports 55-year-old Tina Rose Nye was denied bail Saturday. She faces two counts of assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature, one count of second-degree assault and battery and three counts of unlawful conduct toward a child. It s unclear if Nye has a lawyer to speak for her. She remained jailed Sunday. Sworn statements from the Charleston County Sheriff s Office say Nye assaulted infants between the ages of 3 months old and 5 months old. ....
West Virginia reports 5 additional COVID-19 deaths April 3, 2021 FacebookTwitterEmail CHARLESTON, W. Va. (AP) West Virginia reported five more coronavirus-related deaths Saturday, raising the state s death toll to more than 2,690 since the pandemic began. The state Department of Health and Human Resources confirmed the deaths of a 63-year old man from Fayette County, a 74-year old man from Taylor County, a 45-year old woman from Logan County, an 88-year old man from Kanawha County and an 89-year old man from Brooke County. The total number of virus cases statewide has surpassed 143,000, the state said. “I believe brighter days are ahead for West Virginia,” said Bill J. Crouch, DHHR Cabinet secretary. “We must continue to work together to prevent further loss of loved ones due to COVID-19.” ....
Companies attempt to dismiss opioid lawsuit rejected in WVa April 1, 2021 FacebookTwitterEmail CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) Three drug distributors have been denied a request for summary judgment in a lawsuit filed in West Virginia by the city of Huntington and Cabell County over the opioid crisis. U.S. District Judge David Faber on Wednesday rejected the companies attempt to dismiss the case. The trial is set to start May 3 in Charleston. The lawsuit accuses drug distributors AmerisourceBergen, Cardinal Health and McKesson of fueling the local opioid epidemic. The repeated attempts by the Big Three distributors to delay their courtroom reckoning will not deter these communities from pursuing the resources they need now to combat the opioid crisis that has only worsened amid the COVID-19 pandemic,” plaintiffs attorneys Paul Farrell Jr. and Anne Kearse said in a statement. ....
