Wisconsinites vote for state superintendent in spring primary election · The Badger Herald


Wisconsin’s Spring Primary will take place today, Feb. 16, to narrow the field of candidates for the next state superintendent.
The spring primary is always held on the third Tuesday of February to nominate non-partisan candidates for the Spring Election, according to the Madison City Clerk’s Office website.
Wisconsinites will vote on the next superintendent of public instruction after incumbent Carolyn Stanford Taylor announced she will not run for re-election. Seven candidates filed to run for the nonpartisan seat Sheila Briggs, Troy Gunderson, Joe Fenrick, Shandowlyn Hendricks-Williams, Deborah Kerr, Steve Krull and Jill Underly, according to Ballotpedia.
The candidates’ platforms vary on a variety of issues, including school funding, specifically charter schools and school vouchers in public education policy. ....

City fluoride discussions “dead in the water”

After more than six months of considering the issue of whether or not to remove fluoride from the City of Merrill’s water supply, the issue is, at least for the moment, dead in the water. Initially, the proposal to remove the fluoride was brought to the Water & Sewage Disposal Committee at their June 24, 2020, meeting, placed on the agenda by Alderman Steve Osness. The Minutes of that meeting will reflect that Osness said that, for several reasons, he wanted consideration given to removing the fluoride from City water. He reported it costs approximately $2,200 annually to add fluoride to the water. Per the Minutes, it was also mentioned that the fluoride affects equipment adversely and that a small percentage of fluoride is in the water naturally. th, the incoming Biden Administration announced that it was appointing Wisconsin DHS Secretary-Designee Andrea Palm to be the Deputy Secretary of HHS. It’s hard to imagine she will be missed much in Wisconsin.
There was really only one reason why Gov. Evers picked Andrea Palm to be his Department of Health Services Secretary. Palm had no personal connection to Wisconsin. She was not a doctor. She had no formal education in public health. She had no track record of leading a major government agency. None of that mattered. She was politically connected. Not surprisingly, she proved entirely incapable of leading DHS, especially during a major public health crisis. ....
