Entrepreneur Slashes Lavish Hamptons Estate By Third To $95M Amid Scramble To Pay Off Debts

A lavish Hamptons estate once listed for $140 million has been slashed to $95 million as the owner is selling off the estate to pay off debts.
Tough Lessons: The entrepreneur and property owner, Chris Whittle faces the threat of the property being “forcibly auctioned to pay off his debts” at a substantially reduced price, reports the The Wall Street Journal.
Whittle helped found a private school network based in New York and his creditor, Avenues Global Holdings, is the holding company that owns the network, according to WSJ.
Whittle bought the estate in 1989. His circumstances have since changed and he is unable to repay millions loaned to him in 2013, amid a dispute that eventually ended at the state Supreme Court in 2018, said the report. ....

A 1982 Basquiat Is Expected to Fetch Over $30 Million at Christie's Hong Kong, Setting a Record for a Western Artist in Asia

As auction houses prepare to enter another season with most of the world in lockdown, they are seeking ways to make sure their sales still feel like events. To that end, Christie’s is holding a single-lot sale in Hong Kong dedicated to a pricey painting by Jean-Michel Basquiat on March 23.
The painting, titled
Warrior, is from 1982, Basquiat’s most coveted year, and is estimated to fetch between HK$240 million and HK$320 million ($31 million to $41 million). Christie’s co-head of postwar and contemporary art, Cristian Albu, tells Artnet News that the work, which carries a third-party guarantee, is expected to become the most expensive by a Western artist ever to be sold in Asia. ....

The overwhelming sense of guilt is hard to shake off when returning a holiday present.
But thanks to a local pet adoption group, returning a gift this year can help an abandoned animal.
Friends for Animals of Metro Detroit is holding an unwanted gift auction where proceeds will go toward the organization s mission of helping lost and abandoned animals.
The group is seeking donations of unwanted and unused holiday gifts like electronics, sporting goods, jewelry, tools and kitchen equipment. The organization will also consider lightly used products, if they re in perfect condition, a news release from the organization said.
“With the Spring Auction for the Animals, everyone wins,” said Kim Cross, president and CEO. “A donation to the auction solves the awkward situation of what to do with a gift that just doesn’t work out.
