The United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU), consisting of nine bank unions AIBEA, AIBOC, NCBE, AIBOA, BEFI, INBEF, INBOC, NOBW and NOBO had given the strike call to protest against the government s decision to privatise two more public sector lenders. Strike was a full success, employees and officers stood with us. The way they participated and raised slogans, it shows their disapproval of the government decision very clearly. We got support from all trade unions, some farmer organisations, lot of political parties have supported us, AIBEA General Secretary C H Venkatachalam told PTI.

The leader of a major union claimed total success impacting the clearance of two crore cheques/instruments worth about Rs 16,500 crore. On an average, about 2 crore cheques/instruments worth about Rs 16,500 crore are held up for clearance. Government treasury operations and all normal banking transactions have been affected, C.H. Venkatachalam, General Secretary, All India Bank Employees Association (AIBEA) said.

NEW DELHI: Nine bank unions under the banner of the United Forum of Bank Union (UFBU) on Monday started a nationwide two-day strike against the privatisation of public sector banks and retrograde banking reforms. As many as 10 lakh bank employees are expected to participate in the strike. Banks were already closed on March 13 (second Saturday) and March 14 (Sunday), leading to a four-day break till Tuesday in regular banking operations.

(Representative image) NEW DELHI: The United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU), an umbrella body of nine unions, on Tuesday gave a call for a two-day strike from March 15 to protest against the proposed privatisation of two state-owned lenders. In the Union Budget presented last week, finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced the privatisation of two Public Sector Banks (PSBs)Â as part of its disinvestment plan. The government has already privatised IDBI Bank by selling its majority stake in the lender to LIC in 2019 and merged 14 public sector banks in the last four years. It has been decided to oppose the government s decision to privatise banks during the meeting of UFBU held on Tuesday, All India Bank Employees Association (AIBEA) general secretary C H Venkatachalam said.
