Have you played any good shoot-’em-ups lately? If the answer to that is yes, I would be willing to bet it wasn’t made recently. The shooter genre has become so much of a relic that the term ‘shooter’ barely applies anymore. What was once a catch-all term for the hundreds of games based on moving a vehicle or character in 2D space and shooting enemies has now become the catch-all term for any 3D game that has shooting a gun as the main mechanic, usually with a protagonist in third or first-person. Granzella and NIS America intend on bringing the horizontal-shooter back to its roots with R-Type Final 2, the first mainline R-Type entry since 2003. With a successful Kickstarter campaign that followed an April 1, 2019 announcement that Granzella had to assure was not an April Fools joke, R-Type Final 2 is now available for all shmup fans, old and new, after two years of development. ....
April 30, 2021 NIS America Inc. this week released R-Type Final 2 to Sony Corp.’s PlayStation 4, Microsoft Corp.’s Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Nintendo Co., Ltd.’s Nintendo Switch, and the PC. R-Type Final 2 includes 3D graphics, modernized gameplay, performance-based difficulty, and new and classic stages. The final game includes ship and pilot customization. It sells at $49.99. ....
Good Bydo for now. 30 April 2021 Enjoyably traditional, if a little tatty in places, this is a shooting game that still stands apart from all others. The name is dumb, of course, but I ll take it. Thanks to a certain long-running JRPG series the word Final has lost most of its meaning around these parts, but when R-Type took it on as a suffix back in 2003 it really meant it. R-Type Final was intended as a grand farewell to a genre seen to be on its last legs, and a send-off from one of the all-time greats at that. A funereal air hung heavy over its slow, stately missions, and when Irem turned away from games development in 2011 it felt like part of R-Type Final s prophecy might have come to pass.
