Wisconsin militia member in Whitmer plot extradited to Michigan, released on bond
One of the 14 men charged in last year’s pre-election plot to kidnap and execute Democratic Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer dropped his extradition appeal in Wisconsin, was taken to Michigan and was briefly booked into the Antrim County Jail last Tuesday.
Brian Higgins, 52, is facing a 20-year felony charge after being charged last October with providing material support of an act of terrorism. Higgins is one of a group of right-wing militia supporters who have been charged in the plot to kidnap and kill the governor over her actions in enforcing an initial coronavirus lockdown a year ago.
Few have faith in the Michigan Legislature’s sexual harassment and discrimination policies. Can that be fixed?

Like other employers around the country, Michigan’s two legislative chambers have anti-harassment and discrimination policies in place aimed at giving the myriad of staff helping the Capitol function a means to report and resolve inappropriate behavior.
But the House and Senate, in many ways, operate differently than an average workplace. The “workplace” might be the Capitol, a lawmaker’s Lansing or district office, a conference, an extracurricular event, a downtown bar. Late nights in close quarters abound on busy session days. There’s frequent interaction between staff and people outside the purview of the House and Senate business off
Whether it’s Michigan Senate Majority Leader Mike Shirkey constantly referring to Governor Whitmer’s looks and calling her a “gal” or Michigan Republican Party Chair Ron Weiser calling our Governor, Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson, and Attorney General Dana Nessel “witches” to be “burned at the stake”, Republicans’ public language has become increasingly abusive. It’s easy to blame Donald Trump for this devolution of Republican rhetoric but these men, along with far too many of their colleagues, are responsible for their own actions.
Women in Michigan have had it. These are no longer isolated incidents, they are becoming the norm. And they’ve crossed the line into outright abuse.
Defense attorneys for Pete Musico, his son-in-law Joseph Morrison and Paul Bellar who are accused of being involved in a domestic terrorism plot to kidnap or kill Gov. Gretchen Whitmer claim their clients never intended to act violently.
