Three Pennsylvania canines are among the 21 semifinalists for the 2021 American Humane Hero Dog Awards. Each of the three are semifinalists in different categories. The 21 semifinalists were chosen by public voting. The public now will have the opportunity to choose the seven finalists that will compete to be the country’s top dog at the 11th annual awards, sponsored by the Lois Pope LIFE .

According to the Department of Defense, there are about 2,700 dogs currently in active military service and about 700 that are deployed overseas.
Leaders at the Tri-County Animal Rescue in Boca Raton unveiled an American military hero dog monument Saturday.
Philanthropist Lois Pope donated the statue featuring a veteran and his dog.
The statue honors the service and sacrifice made by these courageous canines. So thankful for what our veterans have done and, especially, also our military dogs, Suzi Goldsmith, owner of Tri-County Animal Rescue, said. If it wasn t for them, many of our veterans might not be here today.

In Palm Beach County, thousands of children leave school on Friday afternoon not knowing if they will eat again before Monday.
Palm Beach winter residents Stephen and Christine Schwarzman wanted to do something about that.
So, they are doing 1.6 million somethings.
The couple s $1.6 million donation to the Palm Beach County Food Bank will expand its “Food 4 Kids” program.
The gift is in addition to a recent $500,000 donation from the Schwarzmans to close out the Food Bank’s capital campaign, which doubled the capacity of its warehouse and distribution center.

The heroes on both ends of the leash were honored at a socially distanced, al fresco evening of celebration and patriotism at The Brazilian Court.
The Pups4Patriots event honored the graduates both canine and human of an American Humane program that trains shelter dogs as companion/service animals for veterans suffering from traumatic brain injuries or PTSD.
The evening included a cocktail reception, a dinner of roasted beet and carrot salad, a choice of seared salmon or steak, and for dessert, a choice of chocolate souffle or pistachio ice cream

Five dogs from southeastern Massachusetts, including from Brockton and Raynham, are competing in a nationwide contest to be named the nation s hero dog.
Public voting for the American Humane Hero Dog Awards is taking place now and will help decide which canine will receive the top honor and will appear on a two-hour special on the Hallmark Channel in the fall. More than 400 dogs are part of the contest.
“Our best friends do so much to improve and even save our lives, and every dog owner knows about the extraordinary, unbreakable bond they share with their dog,” Robin Ganzert, president and CEO of the organization, said in a statement.
