Renamed Garden State Parkway rest areas: More suggestions

View Comments Gov. Phil Murphy announced last week that the state s Turnpike Authority plans to rename the Garden State Parkway rest stops after a series of New Jersey-bred celebrities. There were plenty of names to admire. Brookdale North will be named after  Larry Doby, the first Black player in the American League who grew up in Paterson, while the name of Whitney Houston, who had Essex County roots, will replace Vauxhall. There was a predictable nod to Frank Sinatra amid some surprises. Some of my younger colleagues chastised me for not knowing Judy Blume, the popular author of young adult fiction from Elizabeth.

Jason Love: Bergen County NJ chief of detectives blazed trail

View Comments Law enforcement has always been a family affair for Jason Love, the new chief of detectives with the Bergen County Prosecutor s Office. His uncle, Kenneth Love, was a New York City cop. His wife, Cecilia, is a retired sergeant with the office he now helps direct. And his greatest influence his late father, Ronald Love worked for the now-defunct Bergen County Police Department before moving to the Prosecutor s Office, from which he retired in 1993 as a lieutenant.  It was little glimpses into his father s fascinating life an anecdote here, an overheard conversation there that slowly tugged Love down the same career path.

Where the money went in NJ's legislative primary NJ Spotlight News

File photo Last month’s legislative primary in New Jersey saw record fundraising by candidates statewide in a primary, and independent spending organizations kicked in essentially a new June election high on ads to boost candidates in a handful of districts. Candidates took in more than $37.4 million, the most ever, according to an analysis by the New Jersey Election Law Enforcement Commission (ELEC) of post-election spending reports submitted through June 30. When adjusting for inflation, however, that would be the third-highest total, behind $40.9 million in 2011 and $38.3 million in 2017. Still, the 2021 primary total is preliminary and likely to increase, as some candidates did not file their post-election reports by the June 28 deadline.
