The right for Customs workers to refuse medical treatment has been breached, an employment law advocate has said.
Nine staff, all in fixed-term employment at the maritime border, had their contracts ended early.
Customs deputy chief executive for people and capability Jacinda Funnell said the decision was taken to comply with public health regulations that came into force this month.
From 1 May, all workers in managed isolation and quarantine (MIQ) facilities and government agencies at the border had to be vaccinated.
Advocate Ashleigh Fechney, representing four of the Customs staff who have consequently lost their jobs, said it equated to an unfair dismissal. ....

But this COVID-vaccination programme is unlike any other, so we need specially trained vaccinators to get the job done.
Immunisation Advisory Centre (IMAC) national manager Loretta Roberts said over the next eight weeks another 2000 people will go through the training programme. ....

New Zealand has reached a major vaccination milestone - a quarter of a million COVID-19 jabs have been received by Kiwis so far.

There are now more than 12,000 vaccinators. Of those, 3300 have completed their special COVID-training, with another 2000 expected to do so over the next two months.  ....

COVID-19: Government's under-fire vaccination rollout slow and 'incompetent' - Des Gorman


Staff stationed at the border and in managed isolation and quarantine facilities are currently the Government s top priority for inoculation, with high-risk frontline workers also eligible for the vaccine. However, a number of employees have yet to receive their first dose, with Director-General of Health Dr Ashley Bloomfield admitting on Monday that officials don t have exact numbers on how many staff are continuing to work unvaccinated. 
Speaking to The AM Show on Tuesday morning, Gorman said a lack of staff capable of administering the vaccine is not an excuse for the sluggish rollout to the 50,000-strong workforce. 
It s hard to reconcile that we re a year into a pandemic and we re having conversations like this, Gorman said. ....
