(Source: Hawaii News Now) By Ben Gutierrez | April 23, 2021 at 10:01 PM HST - Updated April 23 at 10:10 PM HONOLULU, Hawaii (HawaiiNewsNow) - A legislative conference committee has approved an additional $2 million in funding for a program aimed at catching motorists who run red lights at intersections. The program got the green light a year ago, but was stalled by the pandemic and a lack of funding. “The program entails installation of red light photo enforcement at 10 intersections in downtown Honolulu, and the idea there is to increase safety,” said state Department of Transportation spokeswoman, Shelly Kunishige.

Denby Fawcett: Show More Aloha, Biki — Bike Program Should Share The Wealth

Denby Fawcett: Show More Aloha, Biki Bike Program Should Share The Wealth - Honolulu Civil Beat Honolulu gives the bike share program many financial benefits with little oversight and scant public input. About the Author Denby Fawcett is a longtime Hawaii television and newspaper journalist, who grew up in Honolulu. Her book, Secrets of Diamond Head: A History and Trail Guide is available on Amazon. Opinions are the author s own and do not necessarily reflect Civil Beat s views. Honolulu’s popular Biki bike share program has attracted a huge ridership during its three and a half years in business. A new audit requested by City Council members points out that the program, a partnership between the city and Bikeshare Hawaii, so far has collected more than $5.6 million in bike rental fees and hundreds of thousands of dollars in sponsorship fees and advertising fees.
