Jami Hayes, new YouthZone Executive Director Jami Hayes, who until recently served as vice principal at Riverview School in Glenwood Springs, has been selected to become the new executive director for the area-wide youth services organization YouthZone. Hayes will be the first YouthZone director from outside the organization since its founding in the 1970s. She will succeed longtime Executive Director Lori Mueller, who announced her retirement last fall but intends to stay on through this summer to help with the transition. “I am honored to serve our community through YouthZone as Executive Director,“ Hayes said in a Monday press release announcing the hiring move. ”My work in the Roaring Fork School District over the last 14 years and in education for the last 20 has provided opportunity to work closely with youth and families as an advocate for equity and social justice. ....

Chelsea Self / Post Independent For 27 years, YouthZone has partnered with the state of Colorado and law enforcement officials to provide intervention and support for local youth caught violating the law through an initiative established in Colorado’s Senate Bill 94, also known as the Colorado Youth Detention Continuum program. The organization has maintained that contract since the program began in 1994 and they’ll continue to do so for at least another five years. The partnership was officially renewed on Jan. 20 after a rigorous review process; the state provides funding and structure to YouthZone to serve Colorado’s 9th Judicial District (Pitkin County, Garfield County and Rio Blanco County). Chelsea Self / Post Independent A recent encounter with one of the many area teenagers YouthZone has taken under its wing was affirmation for Lori Mueller that, 44 years strong, the youth services organization she has led for the past nine years has an impact. “I was in the Rifle office just before Christmas, and there was a young man in the corner on his laptop doing his homework,” Mueller recalled. “He said, ‘this is the best place I can go, because I know I can get help if I need it.
