Council members voted 6-1 in support of ending the city s mandate after state and federal officials said Thursday that fully vaccinated residents do not have to wear a face covering or social distance. The local mask mandate, which required residents to wear a face covering in public spaces, was set to expire May 31. OSHKOSH – Voters decided to reelect a familiar candidate to serve as mayor. Mayor Lori Palmeri, 53, defeated challenger Kris Larson,45, in the April 6 election for Oshkosh mayor. According to unofficial results, Palmeri received 50.8% of the total vote, and Larson received 47.1%. Vote tallies remain unofficial until elections officials verify them in the coming days. It’s my honor to continue to serve for two more years and continue the work we started. I’m ready to get to work. It’s an honor to be reelected by the city of Oshkosh, Palmeri told the Oshkosh Northwestern after the results came in. Palmeri, whom voters first elected to the position in 2019, campaigned on recovery efforts from the COVID-19 pandemic and sustainability for clean water, air, energy and housing policies. In the 89th Assembly District, which includes the city of Marinette, Republican Elijah Behnke defeated Democrat Karl Jaeger. That race was called with just 50% of precincts reporting. That seat was open after Republican John Nygren resigned from the Legislature. More local races included the county executive contests in Winnebago and Fond du Lac counties, city council contests in Oshkosh and Fond du Lac, and school board races – including the contest in Green Bay.
