MASSENA â The Massena Republican Party will hold its caucus at 6 p.m. today at the Massena VFW to nominate candidates for five town seats and one village seat. Seats on this yearâs ballot include town supervisor, two town council members, town clerk and town justice, as well as village mayor. The current town council includes Democrats Steven D. OâShaughnessy, Samuel D. Carbone Jr. and Albert N. Nicola. Two Republicans, Robert Elsner and Susan Bellor, also serve on the board. The town council seats that will be on this yearâs ballot are currently held by Mr. OâShaughnessy, Mr. Carbone and Mr. Nicola. ....

Due to a glitch in the Zoom stream, it appeared as though Haggett was voting no. His feed froze after he had raised his hand among the yes votes. BY ANDY GARDNER North Country This Week MASSENA The Massena Central School District Board of Education narrowly passed a motion to hire a human resource assistant. The board’s split vote took place during their Thursday, Dec. 17 meeting. A motion to appoint Lindsey Sloan-Barkley to the position at a $49,000 pro-rated salary effective Jan. 4 passed 5-4. No votes came from trustees Amber Baines, Kristy Baker, Jodele Hammock and David LaClair. ....
Monday, December 21, 2020 - 1:14 pm BY ANDY GARDNER North Country This Week MASSENA – The Massena Central School District is looking at “a tough budget year” due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Loren Fountaine, who chairs the Board of Education’s Finance Committee, gave his perspective during the full board’s Thursday, Dec. 17 meeting. “I think we all know we’re in for a tough budget year, probably for the next three years, minimum,” he said. Shortfalls in tax revenue at the state level have left Massena’s town and village boards preparing for a 20% cut in state aid. Both made mid-year cuts to their budgets in anticipation of the cuts, and the town had a difficult time last month crafting their 2021 budget. It slightly raised taxes and the tax rate. School districts could be looking at a similar situation. ....
