Thank you for your interest in the Block Island Historical Society. We value everyone who shares our love of the island and history. “ Thursday Night at the Museum”  public  programs continue:   Thursday, 7/15/21 at 8:00 pm we will host  an outdoor slide tour of “Island History with Kristine Monje”, school principal & taxi driver; 8:15 pm - 9:15 pm. The Museum Shop will be open 7:00 - 9:30 pm.  We are grateful for a grant from the Champlin Foundation that is helping to fund  storm window installation on the 3rd floor as well as the newly restored 1st floor windows. Work on these projects will begin this summer. We will also start the work funded by the  1772 Foundation/Preserve RI grant for restoration of the cupola.

Ponaganset controversy: Local tribe wants Chieftains mascot changed

Lorén Spears, executive director, Tomaquag Indigenous Museum Ponaganset High School is embroiled in a skirmish over its use of a Native American mascot, the chieftain.  Although the number of such mascots has been declining over the years, more than 1,200 schools still use indigenous names and images such as chiefs, redskins and warriors, according to fivethirtyeight.com.    Last year the Washington Redskins NFL team dropped its nickname in the wake of racial justice protests in response to the death of George Floyd at the hands of a Minneapolis police officer.  The discussion over the Ponaganset mascot, a chieftain in full headdress, surfaced last summer during the height of the Black Lives Matter protests that roiled cities large and small. Members of the Nipmuc tribe in northern Rhode Island contacted the Rhode Island Commission on Prejudice and Bias, a public body established by the legislature, to begin a conversation with the regional school committee.
