Still working on this...
Longleaf Pine (Pinus palustris) is a beautiful pine of large cones & seeds & very long needles native to the southern U.S. (mostly Deep South).
At one time, it completely dominated the Coastal Plain from Missississippi to North Carolina.  Longleaf thrives on disturbance.  Its seeds do not go very far, as they are bulky & heavy & the trees grow extremely slow, especially in the first 5 years of their lives.  It may take 10-15 years for them to really develop into a nice sapling.  They spend their first few years looking like a cluster of grass.  They spend their time developing a monstrous taproot that makes them extremely drought resistant. ....

There are so many aspects to every space mission that, more often than not, some of them get lost in the history books. How many people from the current generation remember, for instance, that hundreds of tree seeds were taken to the Moon by Apollo 14?

The third mission to the Moon took off in 1971 with Alan Shepard, Edgar Mitchell, and Stuart Roosa on board. Like both other missions before them, two of the astronauts, Shepard and Mitchell, descended down to the surface of the Moon while Roosa stayed in orbit, overseeing their actions.
Roosa, a former U.S. Forest Service (USFS) smoke jumper, had with him small, sealed plastic bags containing up to 500 seeds from five tree species: Loblolly Pine, Sycamore, Sweetgum, Redwood, and Douglas Fir. ....

British scientists are calling on the public to help find the 15 'Moon Trees'

There could be 15 trees throughout the UK grown from seeds that were flown around the moon by NASA on the Apollo 14 mission, and scientists are trying to find them.
The Moon Trees, grown from orbiting seeds flown in 1971, could be anywhere in the UK, including in private gardens, according to the Royal Astronomical Society.
NASA astronaut Stuart Roosa took 500 seeds from Sycamore, Loblolly Pine and other varieties of trees with him as the Apollo 14 capsule orbited the moon.
Most were planted in the US, but it is thought about 15 came to the UK - and now the Royal Astronomical Society (RAS) and UK Space Agency are trying to find them.  ....

Apollo 14's Moon Trees: Astronauts Took Seeds to Space, What Happens Now?

Feb 09, 2021 11:04 PM EST
In 1971, approximately 500 seeds of various species were launched into orbit; it circled the moon 34 times before returning to Earth, where they were then planted in various locations across the globe.
NASA sent 400 to 500 seeds into space to see if they would be altered. In 1971, the seeds went along with the Apollo 14 mission and circled the moon 34 times. They planted them in the US, Europe, and South America. The spouted plant is referred to as Moon Trees by the agency, and there are 83 overall. Unfortunately, about a third of the trees have died since being planted in the 1970s. ....
