Should California Require Residents to Reduce Water Usage?
Gov. Gavin Newsom requested that residents voluntarily reduce their water usage by 15 percent as the drought worsens. Some wonder if state officials should mandate water restrictions while others think it’s unnecessary.
July 15, 2021 • (TNS) When Gov. Gavin Newsom asked Californians to voluntarily conserve water last week as he stood in front of the retreating shoreline at Lopez Lake in San Luis Obispo County, some must have had déjà vu.
It was only six years ago when former Gov. Jerry Brown stood in a field near Lake Tahoe that was bereft of normally plentiful snow and called for water restrictions amid the state s punishing years-long drought.
After two years of below-seasonal rainfall, water levels at some California reservoirs continue to decrease

One-hundred percent of the state of California is in a state of drought, which is impacting local reservoirs across the central coast.
A boat cruise or paddle on Lopez Lake, while peaceful on a summer morning, is actually a reminder of the reservoir s low water levels. So when the lake level is full, roughly just below the chaparral line, you can see the color change or roughly 45 vertical feet down, according to Lopez Lake Supervising Park Ranger Matt Mohl.
REGIONAL â Gov. Gavin Newsom is asking California residents to voluntarily conserve water by 15% to help the state be better prepared for future droughts.
At a July 8 news conference at Lopez Lake near San Luis Obispo, Newsom said people should do their part by making sure dishwasher loads are full and household water leaks are sealed.
The conserved water will contribute to underground water basins, many of which are already at very low levels. Some reservoirs, such as Lake Oroville, are as low as at 30% capacity. Lake Oroville is a part of the State Water Project (SWP), which supplies most of the potable water in the Tri-Valley.
