Gainesville City Commissioner Reina Saco is reserving her newest face mask for a special occasion her next appearance in City Hall. Its green, gold and light red hues geometrically intertwine, creating an intricate reminder of the hands behind its creation: women living in Jerash refugee camp in Jordan.
The mask is one of 50 carefully woven, embroidered and shipped from the camp more than 6,000 miles away to The How Bazar, a vintage store located on University Avenue. The special shipment came from a partnership with Sitti Soap, an organization that helps refugee women sell their products. ....

Wave researcher creates high-voltage art
Coastal engineer Chris DiScenza is bringing his art to local markets and outreach programs in Gainesville
Chris DiScenza began selling his art at local markets in December 2020.
Christopher DiScenza uses thousands of volts of electricity to make art.
Under the name Turbulent Cascade Crafts, DiScenza, 43, first brought his work to Gainesville’s local markets in early December. DiScenza said Turbulent Cascades pertains to his area of research, which, in short, deals with ocean waves and wave turbulence.
To make the artwork, DiScenza brushes water and baking soda onto a specific area of a piece of wood. He then uses neon sign transformers that carry 12,000 and 15,000 volts of electricity through the surface of the wood and burn an image of the path the electricity is traveling through. ....
