Record year for California Climate Investments: $3.1 billion invested in 2020 across California

SACRAMENTO – Despite the challenges posed by a global pandemic and unprecedented heat and wildfires, 2020 was another record year for California Climate Investments with more than $3.1 billion invested in more than 51,000 projects across California’s 58 counties. Projects implemented in 2020 alone will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by nearly 18 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent over the course of their lifetimes.
Of the $3.1 billion investment in 2020, $1 billion is benefiting disadvantaged and low-income communities and households collectively referred to as priority populations. To date, more than $4 billion in California Climate Investments funds have benefited priority populations nearly half of all project investments.
Californians have benefitted from these investments through improved public health, fire prevention, affordable housing and energy efficiency, as well as significant reductions in emissions of greenhouse gases. To date, Califo ....

California Releases Report Charting Path to 100 Percent Clean Electricity

California Releases Report Charting Path to 100 Percent Clean Electricity
Published: Tuesday, 16 March 2021 05:56
Initial Assessment Projects Energy Resources Needed, Details Benefits of Achieving State Law
The report is the initial analysis called for in Senate Bill 100 (SB 100, De León, Chapter 312, Statutes of 2018), the state’s landmark policy requiring that renewable and zero-carbon energy resources supply 100 percent of electric retail sales to customers by 2045. The bill was signed into law in 2018 and calls for these resources to replace fossil fuels for generating electricity in the state.
The 178-page report finds that the goals of SB 100 can be achieved in different ways, but reaching them will require significant investments in new and existing technologies and an increased, sustained build-out of clean energy projects to bring new resources on-line. The report modeled various scenarios to examine sample paths to carbon-free energy. It will be ....

Air board tells San Joaquin Valley growers to phase out burns by 2025

California’s air quality board voted today to call for a near-complete ban of agricultural burning by 2025 in the San Joaquin Valley, one of the most polluted regions in the country.
The move to phase out burning is more than a decade in the making for the eight-county Central Valley, where growers set fire to hundreds of thousands of tons of waste from vineyards and orchards every year. Burning sends up plumes of particles and gases that drift into farm towns largely made up of Latino residents.
After a four-hour hearing and more than an hour and a half of debate, the air board unanimously approved a resolution directing air board staff to work with the local air district to phase out nearly all burning over the next four years.  ....
