THAILAND: Chiang Mai yesterday (Mar 9) received the most undesirable accolade of becoming the most polluted city on the planet.

The grim news from the IQ AirVisual air monitoring website came as authorities revealed that the situation had caused 30,000 people to go to hospital because of respiratory illnesses over the last three months.
The Chiang Mai provincial public health office said 31,788 patients suffering from air pollution-related illnesses from January to March 5 this year, said Dr Suwanchai Wattanayingcharoen, director-general of the Department of Health under the Public Health ministry. ....

Planning documents for the 2021 United Nations Food Systems Summit shed new light on the agenda behind the controversial food summit that hundreds of farmers’ and human rights groups are boycotting. The groups say agribusiness interests and elite foundations are dominating the process to push through an agenda that would enable the exploitation of global food systems, and especially Africa.
The documents, including a background paper prepared for summit dialogues and a draft policy brief for the summit, bring into focus “plans for the massive industrialization of Africa’s food systems,” said Mariam Mayet, executive director of the African Centre for Biodiversity (ACB), who provided the documents to U.S. Right to Know. ....

The Broadway production of “Moulin Rouge! The Musical” was a spectacle that married different dance styles, from cancan and jazz to classic musical theater. Choreographer Sonya Tayeh’s biggest challenge: “How do I build the movement that moves the story and stays clear within that story?”
The show, based on Baz Luhrmann’s 2001 jukebox musical film, closed after eight months when the pandemic shut down Broadway, but it landed 14 Tony nominations, including a choreography nod for Tayeh a great achievement considering it was her Broadway debut. The world of the musical was conceived along with Tony-nominated director Alex Timbers. ....
