A Charleston resource center for people experiencing homelessness uses telehealth to provide medical care to one of the state’s most vulnerable populations. More than 4,000 people in the state of South Carolina are experiencing homelessness. In the Charleston area, there are more than 400 homeless people: veterans, seniors, individuals and families. “It’s really hard to get out of homelessness,” said Marie Elana Roland, CEO of The Navigation Center. People typically live in “a crisis mode,” Roland said, because it is very difficult to escape homelessness. But The Navigation Center, located in downtown Charleston at 529 Meeting Street, provides food, housing support, employment services, hygiene care, and medical care through telehealth with doctors from the Medical University of South Carolina. ....
Walker BEAUMONT – The seemingly never-ending litigious saga between Stephen Hartman and Layne Walker may have finally come to a conclusion, as a final judgment has been entered in Walker’s favor. The judgment stems from a $10 million lawsuit Hartman brought against Walker and two dozen other defendants, alleging a vast conspiracy to “maliciously prosecute” him. In May 2013, Hartman attempted to serve Walker, who was a district judge at the time, while he was holding court, leading to his arrest for disrupting court proceedings. The evidence shows deputies instructed Hartman to leave but he refused. He was then handcuffed and forcibly removed. The criminal charges against Hartman were dismissed, as an internal affairs investigation found the deputies mishandled evidence. ....
Wayne Reaud BEAUMONT – Over the years, iconic attorneys Walter Umphrey and Wayne Reaud have contributed greatly to the Jefferson County courthouse – somewhat literally, as the two men and their law firms have been stuffing heaps of cash into the coffers of the judges who preside over their cases for decades now. Now, apparently seeking to “honor” Umphrey and Reaud for their “accomplishments,” the Commissioners’ Court will vote tomorrow on whether to authorize the erection of busts of the men in the courthouse’s entry courtyard. If authorized, a bust of Gilbert Low will also be erected alongside Umphrey and Reaud. ....
Reaud BEAUMONT – A former Jefferson County sheriff’s deputy recently testified that attorney Wayne Reaud of Reaud Morgan & Quinn threatened him with criminal charges if he didn’t concoct corruption claims against former district judge Layne Walker – an accusation that Reaud completely denies. The Record has obtained the oral deposition of former sheriff’s deputy Steven Broussard, which was given on Jan. 25 in the case of Steve Hartman v. Layne Walker et al. Back in 2013, Broussard, who retired that year amid allegations of evidence tampering, was a bailiff in Walker’s court. Before retiring, Broussard arrested plaintiff Steve Hartman on May 28, 2013, when Hartman tried to serve Walker with a lawsuit while the judge has holding court. ....
