KETCHIKAN (KDN) â The Alaska Press Club has recognized work published by three Ketchikan Daily News staff members in 2020. Daily News Staff Photographer Dustin Safranek, Staff Writer Sam Stockbridge and Wire Editor Robert Rice were among the 2020 Alaska Press Club Award recipients announced this past Saturday. Dustin Safranek earned awards in the Best Scenic Photo and Best Portirait categories. Safranekâs âSnowy Summitâ image of Ketchikan hiker Ken Arriola ascending near the peak of Deer Mountain on March 7, 2020, was awarded second place in the all-media Best Scenic Photo category, to which a judge commented âMan, Alaska is beautiful!â A seven-image collection of Safranekâs portraits of local families who were hunkering down during the first wave of the novel coronavirus pandemic was published in the April 4-5, 2020, edition of the Daily News, and earned the second-place award in the all-media Best Portrait category. ....

Borough Mayor Rodney Dial wrote the resolution, which was co-sponsored by Assembly Member Jeremy Bynum. Dial said in a phone interview Friday that the resolution was motivated by actions that President Joe Biden announced on April 8 aimed at reducing gun violence. More than a dozen members of the public submitted written comment ahead of Monday s meeting, most supportive of the resolution. Among those who wrote in support were former Ketchikan City Council Member Dick Coose, Ketchikan Mayor Bob Sivertsen and former Ketchikan School Board member and 2020 Alaska House District 36 candidate Leslie Becker. Eight citizens spoke at the meeting in person, most of whom voiced their support for the resolution, including City Council Member Riley Gass. City Council Member Janalee Gage delivered a lengthy set of remarks to the Assembly, urging it not to take up the resolution. ....
