Have you seen âem? Those multi-colored flags waving in the breezes downtown and at City Hall? Do you know what they stand for? And how they got there? Those flags, installed on June 1, are Selmaâs contribution to Pride Month, embraced nationwide by Americaâs LGBTQ community. By community, I mean Americans who identify as LGBTQ as well as their families, friends and supporters. That was the spirit that led Selmaâs Leslie Nelson to approach the City Council in February to propose that the City of Selma officially recognize June as Pride Month and honor it by hanging the LGBTQ s traditional colorful flags. ....
  Dozens of residents, mostly from Kingsburg, spoke on the issue in person and via phone, while a crowd of hundreds waited peacefully outside.  It was a hectic week for the five council members after it was announced that Councilmember Jewel Hurtado, who has come out as a member of the LGBT+ community, announced her flag request and proposed proclamation.   Flying the rainbow flag shows acceptance, said Leslie Nelson of Selma, who is organizing a Pride Month in the city.  I don t think this is appropriate city business, Councilmember Brandon Purcell said, adding that he respects the crusade but that doesn t make it city business. For Leslie Nelson, getting swim lessons for her kids Cameron and Austin was a no-brainer. One of our friends lost their kid, three years old, to drowning, Nelson said. According to the CDC, Florida ranks 5th in drowning deaths among children under 17.
