Editor: What is the city social contract with tax-paying businesses? The Capital Improvement Plan (CIP) has been released. The Southern Alberta Art Gallery (SAAG) project is again proposed, and again, wants to open a café with taxpayer money.
We believe the SAAG, in addition to sports, the Exhibition, Street Wheelers, and others, is one of many important pieces of our tourism draw. These draws pull people in who will use our hotels, restaurants, and shop throughout the City. The SAAG has operated superior programming that has enhanced Lethbridge for the past 30 years. ....

Editor: Over the last few months, our City Manager Craig Dalton has engaged in open dialogue with the Lethbridge Transparency Council (LTC) on issues brought forward by the LTC.
Our joint goal is to create a conduit to City Hall, where citizens can not just raise concerns, but also confirm information and understand the reasoning behind decisions and proposals being put forward by the City.
A recent example illustrates this dialogue. Through media, it came to our attention that the City of Red Deer disclosed having a workforce of about 1,100 employees whereas Lethbridge was closer to 1800. The LTC could not find enough information to assess this difference, which if true would be concerning, so we put the question to Mr Dalton. ....

Editor: Over the past several months, the Lethbridge Transparency Council has observed that the majority of City of Lethbridge buses are driving around empty, or with only a handful of riders.
Figures from City sources indicate that a fleet of 42 buses (about 36 passenger capacity each) operate on 14 routes, logging around 970,000 kilometres per year.  40% of these are spares.
In 2005, Lethbridge Transit had an annual ridership of 2,555,695 passengers on 25 buses.  Expenses for the same year amounted to $6,023,794. With revenues of $2,243,222, the net cost to the taxpayer was $3,780,572 or $1.47 per passenger per ride. ....

Editor: The Municipal Development Plan (MDP) – one of the most critical documents to impact the future of Lethbridge – is currently before City Council. The MDP sets the policy direction for everything the City does for the next 10 years, which in turn dictates where our tax dollars are spent and how services will be provided. Even more specific and detailed is the Capital Improvement Plan (CIP), another massive document that will govern the spending of potentially hundreds of millions of dollars in identified projects.
Following are some concerns we have with the current MDP and CIP process. ....
