Archives EPFL A review of Parisian newspaper archives by EPFL’s Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (LIA) has turned up some astonishing discoveries. Among them, we now know that reinforced concrete was developed in Lausanne by a previously unknown daughter of Gustave Eiffel – who also turned out to be EPFL’s first female student. Data mining can sometimes yield incredible surprises. By cross-referencing genealogical data, an archive of Parisian tabloids from the late 19th century and old EPFL enrollment records, an AI algorithm developed at LIA, within EPFL’s School of Computer and Communication Sciences, came up with a real scoop: EPFL’s very first female student actually graduated in 1903, but disguised as a man! What’s more she was a real celebrity: Gustave’s previously unknown daughter, born in 1879. ....
The name Jack the Ripper originated in a letter written by an individual claiming to be the murderer that was later disseminated in the media. However, the letter is widely believed to have been a hoax and may have been written by journalists in an attempt to heighten interest in the story and increase their newspapers circulation. After more than a century of speculation, rumour and legend about the killer, ten years ago historians ploughed through census records to gain insight into the lives of the women he targeted. Studies of the 1881 census showed that far from being the young, lifelong prostitutes that modern cinema portrays, the victims were actually often older and married with children. ....
Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab, echoing Dad’s Army Corporal Jones, advises “Don’t panic, don’t panic”. It seems he “isn’t concerned” about shortages or price hikes. He guarantees we’ll still be able to enjoy a post -Brexit BLT sandwich. Then again, perhaps Mr Raab isn’t the most convincing source of reassurance. Even in a low wattage cabinet, he sheds a dim light. It’s not long since he admitted ignorance of the “full extent” of the importance of the Dover to Calais crossing for British trade. Mr Raab must be the first Foreign Secretary whose world view doesn’t extend as far as Kent. ....
The Wandering Jew Has Arrived by Albert Londres is a new translation by Helga Abraham of Le Juif errant est arrivé, first published in France in 1930. The text is a collection of twenty-seven articles by Londres originally published in the mass-circulation newspaper Le Petit Parisien. One of the great journalists of his time, of any time, Londres was born in 1884 and died in 1932 when the passenger ship taking him back to France, after carrying out a major and mysterious investigation in China, caught fire and sank in the Gulf of Aden. If he was writing now he would be called an investigative journalist. He wrote on prisons, colonial labour, prostitution and madness and is recognised as a source for Hergé’s cartoon character Tintin, whose first journalistic adventure, set in the Soviet Union, was published in January 1929; Londres’s own highly critical account of the Soviet Union had appeared in 1920. ....
