Demolition Set For Former Ohio L&D 53 - The Waterways Journal

Blasting will begin in mid-May this year and last through late June 2022 to demolish the former Lock and Dam 53 near Olmsted, Ill.
Daily blasting is expected Monday through Saturday between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. with all river traffic being stopped between the Olmsted Dam downstream at Ohio River Mile 964.6 and upstream at Mile 962 during blasting operations, according to the Louisville Engineer District. The safety perimeter will be maintained until an “all clear” has been issued.
C.J. Mahan Construction Company of Columbus, Ohio, the contractor for the demolition, plans to host a public meeting at 5 p.m. May 11 at Olmsted City Hall, 150 N. Front St., to discuss the blasting plan and answer any questions. The demolition involves the property’s marine features, including removal of all lock and dam components. ....

Rock Island District Christens Towing Vessel - The Waterways Journal

The Rock Island Engineer District christened the mv. Quincy at the Clat Adams Bicentennial Park in Quincy, Ill., April 30. Several hundred members of the public attended the ceremony, according to Allen Marshall, Rock Island District public affairs officer. Tours of the boat were offered the previous day and also following the ceremony. The mayor of Quincy, Mike Troup, spoke at the event, along with Col. Steve Sattinger, commander of the Rock Island District.
The new vessel is dedicated to the city of Quincy and joins the Mississippi River Structures Maintenance fleet located at the Mississippi River Project Office in Pleasant Valley, Iowa. It serves as the primary towing vessel for the fleet’s new Quad Cities heavy-lift crane barge. It will be responsible for helping to maintain 314 miles of the Mississippi river. ....

High Water Affects Lock, Ferry Operations On Ohio River - The Waterways Journal

Torrential rains in the Ohio Valley and surrounding area led to changes in lock and ferry operations last week.
The Markland Locks and Dam in Louisville temporarily ceased locking due to high water March 3.
The Louisville Engineer District suspended the lock’s operations after close coordination with the U.S. Coast Guard and industry partners. The Corps expected the lockage suspension to last 24-48 hours until conditions improved.
High water caused conditions to deteriorate, causing substantial outdraft and drift buildup on the upper end of the lock chamber, according to a news release from the Corps of Engineers. ....
