Anxiety-Inducing Satellite Data Shows Blue Whales Trying to Dodge Boats in Patagonia

5 FEBRUARY 2021
Up to 1,000 shipping vessels storm through blue whale feeding grounds in northern Patagonia every day, according to a new study from researchers who say the findings should support an urgent conversation about the regulation of marine traffic in Chile.

The research, which used satellite tracking data to identify where blue whales – the largest mammal on Earth – come up against heavy shipping traffic, could also in time help to create strategies and safe havens to protect these ocean giants.
This is a great example of where science can directly help inform conservation actions, Vanessa Pirotta, a wildlife scientist at Macquarie University Australia, who was not involved in the study, told ScienceAlert. ....

Climate change news live: Latest updates on Boris Johnson and Cumbria coal mine

Johnson ‘risks humiliation’ over Cumbria coal mine
Nasa’s former senior climate scientist has penned an open letter to Boris Johnson, telling him to rethink the incoming Cumbria coal mine or risk being “vilified” by Britons for the rest of his time in office.
Dr James Hansen told the PM he had two choices: either to “change the course of our climate trajectory, earning the UK and yourself historic accolades” or “stick with business-almost-as-usual and be vilified around the world”.
“The contrary path is not so easy, but, with your leadership, it is realistic,” the expert told Mr Johnson. ....

Blue whales threatened by ship collisions in busy Patagonia waters

Satellite tracking of blue whales and vessel traffic data released by the Chilean fisheries service Sernapesca has made it possible to pinpoint where ship strikes are more likely to occur for the species.
Luis Bedriñana-Romano, lead author of the paper, said the recently published data on vessel traffic is alarming. “We know where the whales are, but we also know that their total population is very low in this area. In fact, according to our research, they could reach between 200 and 700 individuals,” he said.
“Any incident of collision [resulting in] death of these animals represents a real threat to their conservation,” he said. ....
