More than 130 migrants are believed dead after their rubber boat sank off the coast of Libya, the UN migration agency and rescue organizations said Friday.
In a statement, French volunteer rescue group SOS Méditerranée said its Ocean Viking vessel responded to an alert of three boats of distress in the central Mediterranean waters northeast of the Libyan city of Tripoli. After hours of search in the rough seas, the rescue crew discovered 10 floating bodies and no survivors. ....

More than 100 migrants and refugees are feared to have drowned after a rubber boat capsized off the coast of Libya, a rescue charity said, adding there was little hope of finding survivors.
European humanitarian group SOS Mediterranee said on Thursday that the boat, with 130 people on board, was reported in distress on Wednesday in international waters off Libya in addition to two other boats.
A rescue effort, with the NGO’s Ocean Viking and three merchant vessels, was launched.
“Since we arrived on scene today, we have not found any survivors while we could see at least 10 bodies in the vicinity of the wreck. We are heartbroken,” said Luisa Albera, the search-and-rescue coordinator on board the Ocean Viking. ....

UN migration spokeswoman slams inaction as more than 100 die off coast of Libya

Rescue efforts were launched by NGO ship the Ocean Viking and three merchant vessels on Thursday.
“Since we arrived on scene today, we have not found any survivors while we could see at least 10 bodies in the vicinity of the wreck. We are heartbroken,” said Luisa Albera, spokeswoman for the SOS Mediterranee charity, which operates the Ocean Viking.
International Organisation for Migration spokesman Eugenio Ambrosi confirmed that more than 100 people had died.
“These are the human consequences of policies which fail to uphold international law and the most basic of humanitarian imperatives,” he said.
Some 17,000 migrants have died while trying to cross the central Mediterranean to reach Europe. At least 350 have drowned this year alone. ....

About 130 migrants are feared dead after attempting to reach Europe aboard a boat that capsized in rough waters off the Libyan coast.
According to humanitarian rescue group SOS Mediterranee, the boat had been reported in distress in international waters north-east of Tripoli on Wednesday (AEST).
Rescue boats found the wreck but no survivors.

Another two vessels in distress also called for help in the notorious stretch of Mediterranean Sea in the previous 48 hours through the volunteer-run rescue hotline Alarm Phone amid reports of six-metre waves.
SOS Mediterranee’s rescue ship, the Ocean Viking, and three merchant vessels went out to the site of the capsizing where they found about 10 bodies but no survivors. ....
