The Malta Town Board is considering a zoning amendment that would allow for the construction of 3.5 million square feet of “last-mile” warehouse/distribution space in the Luther Forest Technology Campus very near GlobalFoundries Fab 8. The proposal should be rejected.
In the mid-2000s, in support of the Comprehensive Master Plan, the town of Malta heavily marketed the campus to Intel and others in the semi industry. Ultimately, the state and town were successful in persuading Advanced Micro Devices to locate here. GlobalFoundries succeeded AMD in 2009 and has since invested roughly $15 billion in the Fab 8 facility, creating thousands of well-paying advanced manufacturing jobs and returns that have added over 18,000 induced/indirect jobs throughout the Capital Region, including Malta. MALTA Malta Town Supervisor Darren O’Connor won’t be running for re-election this fall, he said on Saturday.
The 66-year-old Republican, who was appointed to the position in 2018 following the resignation of Vince DeLucia and was elected to a two-year term in 2019, said he decided not to seek re-election for personal reasons.
The town Republican Committee, which was already aware of O’Connor’s intentions, met Thursday and endorsed Mark Hammond, chairman of the town’s Open Space Committee, for town supervisor.
Before becoming supervisor of the rapidly growing and evolving Northway Corridor town, O’Connor was DeLucia’s deputy supervisor, and was previously the deputy town attorney. ....

MALTA The GlobalFoundries-Town of Malta Foundation on Wednesday awarded $142,964 in 31 different grants to benefit community organizations that serve Malta residents and the school districts that serve the town.
While the largest single grant was $16,500 to the Malta-Stillwater Emergency Medical Service for purchase of a ventilator to be available in ambulances, both the Ballston Spa and Shenedehowa school districts each received multiple grants to support STEM learning, robotics and general education programs.
The grants, which were announced during a virtual presentation held Wednesday, are in addition to a $50,000 grant provided in March to help the town of Malta to provide local individuals and families with grocery store gift cards, as the economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic first began to emerge. ....
