The Robinson Canal Bridge on La. 56 between Chauvin and Cocodrie has been reopened to one late of traffic both north and south.
The bridge was closed about a week ago because of structural problems that make it unsafe, the Louisiana Transportation Department said.
Crews are working to repair the bridge, about 1.7 miles north of the highway s intersection with La. 57, or Bayou Sale Road.
The movement of north- and southbound traffic will be controlled by a temporary signal light system. The vehicle weight limit for the bridge has been reduced to 5 tons. Any single vehicles or combination vehicles greater than 5 tons are advised to use an alternate route: La. 57 through Grand Caillou and Dulac. ....

Millions of drivers are expected to hit the roadway this Memorial day weekend and the Louisiana Transportation Department advises travelers to exercise extra caution. DOTD spokesperson Rodney Mallett said 330 people have lost their lives in fatal crashes this year in Louisiana so put down the phone and buckle up to prevent more fatalities.
“You know we’re going to have more people on the highway, a lot of people driving through areas they had not driven before so they’re going to have different driving conditions than they’re used to,” Mallet said.
Last year over 800 drivers died in Louisiana. Mallett hopes they do not surpass that number this year, despite traffic volume up over last year. ....
