A group of locals stand around a small fire pit outside, but it s not your average weekend island bonfire. Instead of roasting marshmallows or drinking beers around the fire, most of them are dressed in full firefighter gear, waiting for their turn to attack the flames. One after another, they step up with extinguishers. Unalaska Fire Department Captain Ben Knowles offers feedback and instruction. The course includes three major sections: fire and hazardous materials training, as well as a written portion. Eight teachers, the Unalaska High School registrar, and Eagle s View Elementary Achigaalux̂ Principal Chad Eichenlaub have all submitted letters of resignation, according to Superintendent John Conwell. The vacancies are equally split among the island s elementary and high schools. The openings at the high school include alternative education and language arts, taught by Amy Purevsuren, who has been with the district for 13 years; high school social studies, currently taught by Ryan Humphrey; another high school language arts position held by Jacob Collins-Wilson; and seventh through ninth grade math, currently taught by Emma Carr ....
Credit Laura Kraegel/KUCB Under the district s latest revision of its Smart Start 2020 plan, Unalaska students will once again return to their classrooms beginning Monday, Feb. 1. The Unalaska School Board approved the district s revisions five to one at its special meeting on Monday. After suggesting opening schools later in the semester, Fernando Barrerra was the only board member to vote against moving forward with the district s revisions. Under the plan, cohorts of 10 or fewer students can return to in-person learning while the city is at the high coronavirus risk level. And classes will be delivered through a hybrid model that includes both in-person and remote learning, where students will attend classes in the afternoons, Monday through Thursday, according to Superintendent John Conwell.
