An annual report released by Heal the Bay, a nonprofit tracking water quality, graded beaches along the Pacific Coast based on levels of fecal bacteria pollution. âIt s a big problem. [Fecal indicator bacteria] causes tens of thousands of people to get sick every year in California and it costs folks tens of millions of dollars in healthcare costs going to the doctor and the pharmacy,â said Luke Ginger, a water quality scientist with Heal the Bay. ....
Print The Tijuana River mouth and slough topped Heal the Bay’s statewide “Beach Bummer” list this year, while Carlsbad and Solana Beach had locations that earned an A+ for year-round water quality. The environmental nonprofit’s annual Beach Report Card ranked the ocean water quality in 500 locations with grades of A through F based on seasons and weather conditions. Samples taken by county, state, sanitation and other agencies were analyzed for three types of fecal indicator bacteria. A’s and B’s were awarded to 93 percent of the beaches, but the one nearest the Mexican border received an F. ....
