NEW YORK - Two-year-old Louie is one of the NYPD Counterterrorism Bureau’s newest bomb-sniffing K9s. Not only did Louie and nine other four-legged graduates receive their doggy diplomas on Wednesday, but Assistant Chief Martine Materasso told FOX 5 NY they’re named after the NYPD’s fallen heroes. During a candidates’ Night on Tuesday, with candidates speaking both in person at the town offices and via Zoom, all three candidates made their pitch for the position. Lou Alvarez, Jason Somero and Charlie Jackman, all three of whom would be newcomers to the board, have put in for the position. Alvarez, who has served on the Planning Board for the past four years, said he has lived in New Ipswich since 1989, but it was not until his recent retirement that he had the time to become involved in town boards. He said he’s enjoyed his work on the Planning Board, and wants to become further involved in the running of the town. ....

Now, 19 years after the attacks, EVERY 9/11 first responder knows it’s not a question of whether they will get ill, but when. Despite 69 chemotherapy treatments and numerous surgeries for his liver cancer, retired Detective Alvarez traveled from New York City to Washington one last time to try to convince Congress to never forget those heroes who joined the 9/11 rescue and recovery, some working 8 months at Ground Zero.
