Self–driving tech company Pony.ai, backed by Toyota Motor Corp, said on Monday its next-generation technology for robotaxis will be using lidars made by Luminar Technologies, Inc.
Lidars are laser-based sensors that are a key component to many autonomous vehicle technologies and help them perceive the environment around the cars.
James Peng, Pony.ai CEO said the startup chose Luminar‘s Iris lidar for its performance but also as it can be integrated into the car better than traditional lidars.
“It’s actually starting to blur the line between what you see as a very well designed passenger vehicle and the monstrosities that have been on top of some of the AV test vehicles,” said Austin Russell, founder and CEO of Luminar. ....

Chinese self-driving trucking system developer PlusAI announced that it has signed a merger agreement with the special purpose acquisition company (SPAC) Hennessy Capital Investment Corp. V. After the merger is completed, PlusAI will list on the New York Stock Exchangeuse with the stock code PLAV in the third quarter of this year. According to the terms of the transaction, after the merger, PlusAI will have a market value of approximately US$3.3 billion and will raise approximately US$500 million in new financing.

Pony.ai, a leading autonomous driving technology company, introduced its newly designed sensing platform in collaboration with lidar hardware and software company Luminar Technologies, Inc. Pony.ai also announced it has driven more than five million kilometers across an operational coverage area of more than 850 km² and has provided more than 220,000 Robotaxi rides.
Pony.ai is set to deploy automotive-grade production autonomous fleets in 2023 globally. The next-generation fleet will integrate Luminar’s Iris and feature a multi-sensor 360-degree configuration and a slimmest profile roofline at just 10cm off of the vehicle roof. ....
