Saturday’s election saw incumbent Letitia Hughes retain her seat after narrowly defeating former Mayor Pro Tem Kenzie Moore, while the DeSoto ISD Place 6 school board race will go to a June runoff election.
Only 60 votes separated Hughes victory over Moore in a race where a total of 3,098 votes were cast in their race. About 10% of registered voters cast a ballot for the municipal elections.

DeSoto’s mayoral transition of power was completed on Thursday evening as Rachel Proctor was officially sworn in and began her term.
“I want to extend a heartfelt thanks to the voters of DeSoto for entrusting me to lock arms with you all and lead our great city into the future,” Proctor said after being sworn in as the 22nd mayor of the city.

DeSoto Council Thanks Mayor Pro Tem Moore
It was cold, rainy and dreary outside, but inside DeSoto City Hall and Council Chambers it was the continuation of an era of success with warmth, comradery, and a bright future envisioned for the city as Rachel Proctor returned to guide the city as the Mayor and Letitia Hughes embarked on a new path as city councilmember, Place 7, on Thursday evening.

The dust has settled on DeSoto’s mayoral election, with Rachel Proctor earning more than 60% of the vote to complete the late Mayor Curtistene McCowan’s unexpired term.
Proctor, a former mayor pro tem, thanked voters for supporting what she called her “Back to the Basics” platform and pledged to be accountable to her constituents.
“I’m excited to join the efforts of the current Council as we continue to work to address the needs of our residents, businesses, and faith community most impacted by the current pandemic while leveling as much support for our city as possible,” she said.
